Eurovision 2017: Could Greece be going home early again?

Greece failed to qualify for the Eurovision Song Contest final for the first time ever last year and they could be in trouble again after Demy’s second technical rehearsals with This Is Love.

Some of the camera angles were off and the vocals were not good.

There were concerns over some of the staging and vocals after their first run through and many expected the problems to be fixed before locking down camera angles and vocal levels before the full dress rehearsals and live televised semi final.
However in the exclusive rehearsal video, Demy sounds fine in the verses but her backing singers are painfully out of key on the big notes in the chorus.

Demy has two shirtless dancers in white long johns and the gimmick should be looking like they’re performing under water through use of screens and projections. Unfortunately, the camera angles ruin the effect, with part of a dancer’s arm appearing beyond the screen. It comes across like there’s static interference with the television screen.

All is not lost, however. If there was a problem with the in-ear monitors, they can still be corrected and the delegation can ask the producers to change camera angles.

Greece has a wide diaspora and the United Kingdom, Cyprus and Australia all vote in this semi final. This is loyalty and This Is Love will need it. It could just save them from elimination at the semi final stage for a second Eurovision running.

With Cyprus competing in the same semi final, Greece will still get points and might even get to the Eurovision final, but British fans will be reminded of what happens when a good song hits vocal problems in the chorus on the Eurovision stage.

It’s called the Jemini effect!

Greek Eurovision fans had high hopes for a return to the top 10 before rehearsals started.

Greece won Eurovision the last time it was held in Kyiv and apart from the colour of Demy’s dress, there’s not much similarity with Greece’s only winning performance.

Helena Paparizou gave a strong performance with four men with open shirts and a clever gimmick where she simulated playing a cello with strings from a dancer’s trousers.

Greece’s golden age at the Eurovision Song Contest saw them finish in the top 10 nine times out of 10 from 2004-2013. They finished 20th in 2014 despite being tipped as dark horses for another strong result.
